Hello all. Allow me to shill for myself as I’m currently looking for work. I’m based in Fukuoka, Japan (UTC+9) and plan to stay here, although can work remotely. I am looking for a full-time position but not opposed to consulting opportunities.

I am an experienced developer with 18 years in the industry. I have worked professionally with all kinds of languages including C++, C#, Perl, Java, Kotlin, and of course Elixir. I’ve worked on monolithic native Windows apps, APIs for mobile apps, internal and full-stack web services, I’ve built CLI tools, I’ve architected AWS stuff with terraform. I’ve worked for large multinational companies, VC-funded startups, and small businesses.

I am more of a backend that a frontend person. I like thinking about the core logic and how things fit together to solve a problem.

Recently I have been doing a lot of reading and thinking about how to effectively develop software solutions, and how to foster genuine innovation by empowering teams to be productive. I’m not sure what the solutions are but I would love to work with a team that has a sense of purpose, is closely connected to the people who use the software, and is striving to solve a problem that I could explain to my Grandma.

Elixir

I have been using Elixir as a hobby since 2018. I have 354 elixir posts on StackOverflow and 19 solutions here. I wrote a mildly popular post here about Protocols and Behaviours. I have contributed changes to OSS Elixir projects including elixir itself. I run a GitHub app, Mergery, that is fully written in Elixir and merges about 100 PRs a day. I open-sourced the debouncer part. My blog is written in Elixir. You can see some of my Advent of Code solutions. I worked full-time with the language between 2022-2024.

I am also happy to work with other languages, including ones I do not currently know. Except for Visual Basic…

AI

A lot of people are enthusiastic about AI, so I thought I should share my position so we are on the same page from the start. I believe that (generative) “AI” is the biggest misallocation of resources this industry has ever made, and that it is currently a net bad for individuals, for companies, and for society. I love software and technology, but believe that GenAI is a mostly a deceptive parlour trick and we can deliver far more value by focussing our efforts elsewhere.
