Full-stack Elixir Engineer – Us (Ember), London, UK — Remote UK/EU (1 day/week London preferred)

We’re a small, fast-moving, well-funded startup building an app that helps couples strengthen their relationships using a mix of AI, content, and guided activities. We’re hiring our second Elixir engineer to help us scale our platform as we push toward PMF.

About us

My name: Chris Bull
My position: Co-founder & CTO
Company name: Us (Ember)
Company website: usapp.ai
Company headquarters (country): UK

We’ve been in beta for ~5 months with great user feedback and strong early PMF signals. Our backend is Elixir/Phoenix on GCP (GKE) with Postgres; mobile is Expo/React Native; internal admin is Inertia + React. We lean heavily on AI and modern coding assistants (e.g., Cursor) to move fast.

About the job

Job title: Full-stack Elixir Engineer
Job description: Own major product slices across our Elixir/Phoenix backend and internal React tooling; ship reliably in a small team; help design/scale AI-powered features; collaborate closely with founders to iterate toward PMF.
Salary range: Competitive; generous equity on permanent conversion

Qualifications or experience required: Strong Elixir/Phoenix production experience; SQL/Postgres; comfort across the stack; familiarity with OTP, real-time features, and building clean, well-tested APIs. Bonus: GKE/Kubernetes/Terraform, and AI-assisted development.

What the successful job applicant will be working on: Backend services (OTP/Phoenix, APIs, data models), real-time features, internal CMS/admin tooling, and AI pipelines/integrations powering our relationship-learning experience.

Position on remote work

Remote job: Can be
Remote restrictions: UK preferred; open to EU-based remote for strong candidates
Remote leeway: London-proximate team meets one day per week; flexible for EU candidates who can visit occasionally (we already have one person not in the UK)
Any other notes about your position on remote work: We value focused, async-friendly collaboration with high ownership.

About the interview process

30–45 min intro with Me → 1-2hr technical discussion (Elixir/architecture) + maybe pairing→ founder conversation & team fit → offer. Fast turnaround.

Further info

This role starts as a 3-month contract with the intention to convert to full-time if we’re all excited by the fit. To apply or ask questions, email chris@usapp.ai with links (GitHub/portfolio/CV). This has worked well for us so far. We pay fair rates.
